The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA) has successfully conducted sensitization training for Village Health Assistants (VHAs) across the National Capital District in preparation for the rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program.
The training equipped VHAs with essential knowledge on HPV, cervical cancer prevention, the importance of vaccination, and the district’s vaccination rollout strategy. As trusted frontline health workers within their communities, VHAs play a vital role in creating awareness, addressing misconceptions, and encouraging families to ensure eligible girls receive the HPV vaccine.
The sensitization program forms part of NCDPHA’s commitment to strengthening community engagement and ensuring the successful implementation of the national HPV vaccination campaign, which aims to protect girls from HPV-related diseases, including cervical cancer.
NCDPHA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robin Og said, “Village Health Assistants are the bridge between our health facilities and the communities we serve.” He said that by equipping them with the right information and skills on HPV vaccination, we are empowering them to become advocates for cervical cancer prevention and champions of healthier futures for our young girls.
“Their role will be critical in ensuring communities understand the benefits of the vaccine and support the successful rollout of this important public health initiative,” said Dr. Oge.
Dr. Oge further emphasized that prevention remains one of the most effective approaches to reducing the burden of cervical cancer and other HPV-related illnesses.
“The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective tool that can save lives. Through this rollout, NCDPHA is investing in the health and well-being of future generations, ensuring that our girls are protected against preventable diseases and allowed to lead healthy and productive lives.”
NCDPHA encourages parents, guardians, schools, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the HPV vaccination program and share accurate information in their communities.
The HPV vaccination rollout is part of broader efforts by the Government of Papua New Guinea and health partners to reduce cervical cancer incidence and improve public health outcomes for women and girls throughout the country.
