The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA) today commemorated World Tuberculosis (TB) Day at Gerehu General Hospital, alongside partners and government representatives from World Vision, the National TB Program, the National Department of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
The event highlighted the collective commitment to tackling TB in Papua New Guinea and marked the official launch of the SSI TB Program. This innovative program introduces the use of an AI-powered portable X-ray machine to detect TB at its earliest stages. By distinguishing TB patients from healthy individuals quickly and accurately, the technology aims to contain the spread of TB and strengthen public health outcomes in the National Capital District.
The Chief Eexcutive Officer for NCDPHA Dr. Robin Oge, underscored the importance of innovation and collaboration:
“The fight against TB requires both strong partnerships and modern solutions. The launch of the SSI TB Program, with its AI-powered portable X-ray machine, represents a breakthrough in early detection and prevention. Together with our partners, we are determined to reduce TB transmission and safeguard the health of our communities.”
Dr. Amons Lano, Public Health Director of NCDPHA, emphasized the public health impact:
“TB continues to challenge our health system, but today we take a bold step forward. By harnessing AI technology, we can identify TB cases earlier, treat patients faster, and prevent further spread. This program is a testament to our commitment to innovation, community health, and saving lives.”
The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA) is dedicated to delivering quality health services, strengthening public health systems, and fostering partnerships that improve the wellbeing of communities across Port Moresby and Motu Koitabu communities.
