National Capital District, Port Moresby 04th December 2025- The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority has commemorated the World Aids Day with students and staff of Port Moresby National High School. The event marks to remember those who have fallen as the victims of HIV/AIDS and to advocate for the inclusive effort to conduct awareness of the preventive measure. The students are instructed to abstain from stigma and discrimination towards those who are living with AIDS.

The Diseases Control Coordinator for NCD PHA Dr. Morimai Ipai said that avoid having multiple sexual partners will prevent oneself from getting HIV/AIDS.

“It is not safe to have sex outside of marriage. HIV infection is mostly affecting people at the age group as young as 15 to 25. There are people living with HIV who are on ART, and now we have about 9,000 people who are already getting their antiviral treatment in NCD alone.”

In Papua New Guninea (PNG) HIV/AIDs infection increases significantly. The National AIDs Council Secretariat Acting Director Mr. Victor Aisa said there were about 30 new infections, including seven babies born with HIV, every day.
“Investing in prevention and education for those most at risk will deliver significant returns, save lives and invest in a healthier future,” Mr Aisa said.

He added that the estimated number of people living with HIV is 120,000, and of the total people living with HIV who know their status are 69,510. “HIV related deaths are 3,400 people. Investing in awareness will prevent these vulnerable people, and those most at risk will save lives and invest in the future.

“The major source of contracting HIV in performance is through sex. When we come to the crossroads in our sexual desires, we must rise above the challenge. “We must not allow our emotions to control us. We must control our emotions,” Mr Aisa said.

The Chief Executive Officer for NCD PHA Dr. Robin Oge has acknowledged the National Department of Health, FHI 360, World Vision, and Global Fund for being the major support of HIV/AIDS program in PNG.

Dr. Oge said that the epidemic affects our youth with the highest new cases among those aged 15 to 45 and the students are within this category. It is an opportunity to remind teachers and students of the risks involved and the prevention measures, how they can protect themselves from HIV.

“There are 26 clinics in the NCD that run the HIV/AIDS programs and testing treatment is free. The NCD PHA’s management is committed in supporting the HIV/AIDS program in NCD with the support of the partners to prolong life of HIV patients and reduce the spread of HIV through awareness.”
