The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority’s management has commemorated the Gender Based Violence (GBV) Activism week in the National Capital District. The GBV Officer and NCD PHA’s staff has conducted public awareness on GBV to the patients at Gerehu Hospital as a lead up activity.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence directed at someone because of their gender, and it disproportionately affects both genders (Male/Female). It includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic harm, and is recognized as a violation of human rights.

The GBV Officer Sr. Regina Howard said that GBV is the harmful acts perpetrated against individuals based on their gender.

Forms of Gender Base Vviolence:

•           Physical violence: hitting, beating, or other bodily harm.

•           Sexual violence: rape, sexual assault, harassment, exploitation.

•           Psychological violence: threats, humiliation, intimidation, emotional abuse.

•           Economic violence: controlling access to money, education, or employment.

•           Disproportionate impact: While GBV can affect anyone, women and girls are most at risk, especially in times of crisis or conflict.

•           Human rights violation: GBV is recognized internationally as a form of discrimination and a violation of fundamental rights.

•           Contexts: It can occur in private (e.g., domestic violence) or public spaces (e.g., workplace harassment, community violence).

The Chief Executive Officer for NCD PHA Dr. Robin Oge said, GBV undermines health, dignity, security, and autonomy of victims.

“It perpetuates cycles of inequality and hinders social and economic development. Addressing GBV requires legal protection, education, community awareness, and support services for survivors.”

Dr. Oge further emphasized that the NCDPHA’s management is taking the initiative to address these issues by creating an avenue at Gerehu Hospital to act as the first point of contact by the GBV victims to seek medical attention and counselling.

The management of NCD PHA ensures that all people are protected from any types of disease including the victims of GBV.
