EPI Program

1. Program Description:

The EPI Program generally manages and implements activities related to childhood immunization at health facilities that are providing immunization services. The EPI program is basically responsible for coordination and development of implementation plans, organization of outreach services from the clinics and supervision of routine Immunization activities in Health Facilities within NCD. Its strategies are under KRA 4.

There are currently twenty-four (24) health facilities in NCD that are providing immunization services. This program ensures that all vaccines are delivered to these facilities on time, cold chain equipment are available for use and staff are trained and available to provide service. It is a crucial and demanding service provided under the public health division to ensure all children are prevented from vaccine preventable diseases.

The immunization services of the EPI Program are available at all major and minor health facilities in NCD including PMGH and Gerehu Hospital. The service is also available at other private health facilities including Karua Medical Centre, Mobile Doctors Clinic and Aharoni Medical Centre.

Key Activities at Health Facilities;

• Awareness, screening and vaccination of all children below the age of 2 with recommended vaccines.
• Follow up visits and information dissemination

Key Activities in the Communities;

• Quarterly Mobile Immunization Services throughout each of the 3 districts in NCD

Childhood Immunization services is mainly provided at the health facilities where caregivers bring children over for vaccination.

Apart from these static sites (health facilities), a quarterly or yearly mobile immunization is usually carried out where health workers visit and vaccinate children in the communities and settlements in the city particularly where there is low immunization coverage. The mobile immunization service is a strategy used to identify and vaccinate unvaccinated children who have not been brought to the health facilities for routine immunization.
