The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen tuberculosis (TB) detection and control in Port Moresby, with the deployment of ultra-portable X-ray machines for community-based screening.
This innovative technology allows health teams to conduct rapid, high-quality chest X-rays in urban settlements, clinics, and other community settings, making TB screening more accessible than ever before. The ultra-portable machines are lightweight, battery-operated, and designed for use in areas where traditional diagnostic equipment is difficult to transport.
The NCD PHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Robin Oge said the initiative reflects the Authority’s commitment to tackling TB, one of Port Moresby’s and Papua New Guinea’s most pressing public health challenges.
The screening program is being rolled out in collaboration with frontline health workers, community leaders, and international partners. It complements existing TB control measures, including awareness campaigns, sputum testing, and treatment support services in the clinics.
The management of NCD PHA is very committed in addressing public health challenges and ensuring that effective health service is being delivered to the residents of Port Moresby and Motu Koitabu communities.
