The Management of National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with health professionals, civil society, and international partners, is proud to join the global community in commemorating World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, observed from 18 to 24 November 2025. This year’s theme, “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat the growing threat of drug-resistant infections.

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the medicines designed to kill them. In PNG, where access to second-line treatments is limited and infectious diseases remain a leading cause of illness, AMR poses a serious public health risk.

The Chief Executive Officer for National Capital District Provincial Health Authority Dr. Robin Oge emphasized, “We must act decisively to preserve the effectiveness of life-saving medicines. This is a call to all the residents of the National Capital District, from health workers and farmers to parents and policymakers to use antibiotics responsibly and support infection prevention efforts.”

The public is urged to:

  • Avoid using antibiotics without a prescription
  • Complete the full course of treatment as directed
  • Never share or reuse leftover antibiotics
  • Practice good hygiene to prevent infections

The management of NCD PHA reaffirms their commitment to the Global Action Plan on AMR and continues to strengthen its response through improved surveillance, regulation, and public education.
